Material Selection

Four Species.
Each With a Purpose.

Timber selection is not cosmetic -- density, grain structure and moisture behaviour directly affect long-term performance in your target market's climate. Here is how we approach species selection for wholesale and brand partners.

Ash wood plantation shutters showing prominent grain character

Ash Wood (White Ash)

High density and pronounced grain pattern. Preferred by buyers targeting premium residential and hospitality segments where visible wood character is part of the product's value. Heavier per unit than basswood or paulownia -- a factor in freight cost calculation for large orders.

Premium Tier
  • Prominent grain aesthetics
  • High structural density
  • Suitable for wide louvres
  • Higher unit weight
Basswood plantation shutters with fine uniform grain

Basswood (Tilia spp.)

Consistent fine grain, low natural resin content and stable dimensional behaviour under controlled interior conditions. Widely used in the North American and Australian shutter market. Takes primer and topcoat evenly, which supports colour consistency across large production runs -- a key consideration for OEM brand partners.

Most Specified
  • Uniform grain, even coating
  • Dimensionally stable (dry interiors)
  • Lightweight -- lower freight cost
  • Consistent colour across batches
FSC certified pine plantation shutters with natural grain finish

Pine (FSC® Certified Series)

FSC® Available

Our pine series is available with FSC® chain-of-custody documentation -- relevant for buyers supplying retail channels in the EU, UK, and Australian markets where responsible sourcing documentation is increasingly required by end-retailers or project specifications. Pine offers a good balance of structural performance and cost, with a more pronounced natural grain than basswood.

Paulownia plantation shutters with smooth clean paint finish

Paulownia (Paulownia tomentosa)

One of the lightest structural timbers used in shutter manufacturing. Exceptionally low density reduces per-unit weight, which translates directly into lower freight cost per container -- a meaningful factor for buyers shipping to Australia or New Zealand. Smooth, relatively featureless grain accepts paint finishes cleanly.

Lightweight
  • Lowest unit weight
  • Freight cost advantage
  • Clean paint acceptance
  • Lower structural density

Species Quick Comparison

Manufacturing Detail

Wood Shutter
Production Process

From raw timber selection through to finished, packaged product -- every stage of our wood shutter manufacturing is controlled in-house. The six steps below reflect how we maintain consistency across 280,000 plantation shutter sets per year.

Wood selection -- evaluating timber species and grain quality for plantation shutters

Wood Selection

Incoming timber -- basswood, paulownia, ash, and FSC® certified pine -- is evaluated for moisture content, grain density, and dimensional stability before acceptance. Only material meeting our incoming quality control (IQC) criteria enters production. Species selection is matched to the end application and target market requirements, with FSC® chain-of-custody documentation available for markets that require it.

CNC cutting and milling of wood shutter stiles, rails and louvres

Cutting & Milling

Conditioned timber moves to our 20+ CNC machining centres, where stiles, rails, louvres and frame components are profiled to dimensional tolerance. Custom shapes -- arch, circular, triangular -- are machined using the same equipment, not outsourced. Finger-jointing of frame components is handled at this stage, producing a structurally stable joint whose bond strength exceeds the surrounding timber fibre.

Sanding and surface finishing of wood shutter components on automated line

Sanding & Finishing

Components are progressively sanded before entering our three automated coating lines. Water-based primer is applied to all surfaces -- including routed cavities and back faces -- sealing the wood against moisture exchange during transit and post-installation. Topcoats are applied in controlled conditions on continuous automated lines, with UV anti-yellowing cycles run on each batch to validate colour stability over time.

Assembly of wood plantation shutter panels at automated workstations

Assembly

Coated components are assembled at 80+ automated workstations. Hinge specification is matched to the timber species, louvre width, panel height, and total panel count per frame -- a denser species such as ash requires a different hinge grade than paulownia of the same nominal dimension. Louvre tensioning, tilt-rod alignment, and hardware torque values are set to specification at assembly, not adjusted post-installation.

Quality control inspection and testing of finished wood plantation shutters

Quality Testing

Finished shutter panels pass through a three-stage quality control sequence: IQC (incoming material), IPQC (in-process inspection at each production stage), and FQC (final product inspection on 100% of units -- not a sampled subset). UV anti-yellowing tests, humidity cycling, and structural load tests on hinges and louvre pivots are conducted per batch. Non-conforming units are quarantined and reworked before any packaging authorisation is issued.

Export packaging of wood plantation shutters for international freight

Packaging

Panels are individually wrapped in protective foam and sleeved before carton assembly. Cartons are designed for standard FCL container loading patterns and tested against compression and drop scenarios representative of international sea freight. OEM and private-label packaging -- including branded outer cartons, custom inserts, and installation guides -- is produced in-house and applied at this stage. Packaging compression tests are conducted per batch, not sampled from production runs.

Application Guidance

Where Wood
Works -- and
Where It Doesn't.

We would rather tell you the honest answer now than have your customers report field failures later. Wood plantation shutters are excellent products in the right environment. They are the wrong product in others.

Recommended Environments

  • Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms -- standard conditioned interior environments with stable relative humidity are ideal for all four timber species.
  • Home offices and studies -- typically low humidity variation, low direct moisture exposure. Wood performs predictably.
  • Commercial interiors with HVAC control -- offices, retail, hospitality spaces where climate is actively managed.
  • Dry or temperate climate markets -- the US Southwest, inland Australia, and similar regions where ambient humidity is consistently moderate to low.

High-Humidity Environments -- Not Recommended

Wood plantation shutters are not suitable for rooms with sustained relative humidity above approximately 70%, or for spaces with regular direct moisture exposure. This includes steam-heavy bathrooms, indoor pools, laundry rooms, and coastal properties where windows are frequently opened in humid salt-air conditions.

In these environments, timber will absorb and release moisture cyclically. Over time, this causes louvres to stiffen, panels to bow, and paint to crack at joints -- regardless of finish quality. This is a material physics issue, not a manufacturing defect.

For these applications, we recommend considering our PVC or aluminium plantation shutter series instead:

Buyer Checklist -- Is Wood Right for This Order?

  • Confirm the target installation rooms (living areas vs. bathrooms vs. outdoor)
  • Confirm the climate zone -- coastal humid vs. dry inland vs. temperate
  • Check whether end-retailer or project spec requires FSC® chain-of-custody documentation
  • Confirm louvre width requirement -- wider louvres add panel weight and affect hinge specification
  • Confirm whether custom shapes (arch, circle, triangle) are required -- these are standard, not premium-priced
  • Confirm paint colour specification -- physical colour samples available on request before committing to large-run colours

Common Sourcing Questions

Yes. FCL mixed loads are standard practice -- we regularly ship orders that include basswood and paulownia panels in the same container, with separate packing and labelling per SKU. Confirm species breakdown at the order stage so hinge specifications are matched correctly to each panel type.
The FSC® chain-of-custody certification covers the pine timber input material and the production process for our pine series. This means we can provide documentation tracing the timber from certified forest to finished product -- which is what most retail and project specifications require. For full details on scope and documentation format, see our sustainability and certification page.
MOQ is flexible and depends on the order configuration -- species, louvre width, colour, and shape all affect production batch economics. We accommodate FCL mixed loads, small-batch air freight for urgent orders, and repeat replenishment schedules. Contact our team or use the configurator to share your requirements and we will advise on the most efficient order structure.
Standard louvre widths run from 47mm to 130mm. Custom widths outside this range are possible subject to tooling and minimum volume -- raise this at the enquiry stage and our engineering team will confirm feasibility and any tooling lead time.

FSC® Certified Pine -- Compliance Documentation Available

For buyers supplying retail channels in the EU, UK, Australia, or markets where responsible timber sourcing documentation is required by end-retailers or project specifications -- our FSC® certified pine series provides chain-of-custody traceability from certified forest to finished product. This is not a marketing claim; it is a documented supply chain process.

If your target market or retail partner requires FSC® documentation, confirm this at the enquiry stage so we can ensure the correct timber batch and documentation package is applied to your order.
